About NNLM RD3: Resources for Data-Driven Discovery
NNLM RD3 has been developed to foster learning and collaboration in data science. It is a collaborative project devoted to educating science and medical librarians. Content for NNLM RD3 is contributed by a dedicated team of subject specialists from diverse regional research libraries. NNLM RD3: Resources for Data-Driven Discovery Scope Statement: NNLM RD3 is a resource for librarians, library students, information professionals, and interested individuals to learn about and discuss:
- Library roles in data science
- Fundamentals of domain sciences
- Emerging trends in supporting networked scientific research
NNLM RD3 is intended for librarians and individuals interested in how research and academic organizations generate, share, store and/or use data for scientific research, with an emphasis on research in the health, biological, and physical sciences. This website provides tools and information that will help information professionals effectively participate in networked science by collocating resources on education, outreach, and collaboration, as well as current practices and data science news.
Getting Started in Data Science
Are you new to data science? The following resources will start you on the road to understanding the areas in data science, including scholarly communication, library roles, the structure of the scientific research environment, data and its diversity, and the importance of data management.
- The Emerging Role of Libraries in Data Curation and E-Science (2011) – Pivotal paper stresses the vulnerability of digital data and the critical role that libraries can assume in managing this intellectual output.
- The Fourth Paradigm – Don’t be intimidated, you don’t need to read the entire book in one sitting! (But it’s worth going back to read individual chapters). The Fourth Paradigm’s Foreword and the first chapter “Jim Gray on eScience: A Transformed Scientific Method” nicely illustrate how the integration of computers and evolving technologies have revolutionized the way science is conducted.
- What is e-Science and How Should it be Managed? – Captures the essence of e-science, critical roles for librarians, and the importance of open data sharing
- Data Types (4 min YouTube video) – Describes the diverse entities that come under the umbrella term data and the different ways data is captured.
- A Day in the Life of an Academic Researcher Part 1 (7 minute YouTube video) and A Day in the Life of an Academic Researcher Part 2 (5 minute YouTube video) – Explain the research environment and the different roles played by members of a research team.
- NISO Primer: Research Data Management (2015) – Concise yet comprehensive 24 page downloadable guide to research data management.
- The Journal of eScience Librarianship (JeSLIB) – Specifically dedicated to the advancement of e-Science librarianship, JeSLIB includes peer-reviewed research and “e-Science in Action” articles on topics such as research data management, librarians embedded on research teams, data services, data curation, and data sharing and re-use.
